Rose Marie Denney Dye

Rose Marie Denney Dye, 94, widow of Phillip Bradley Dye, passed peacefully at home surrounded by family on September 4, 2022. Her memorial service will be held Saturday, September 10, 2022 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be at a later date in Mt. Olive Cemetery, Akron, NY.

Mrs. Dye was born in Mount Pleasant, SC on Royall Avenue on August 3, 1928, daughter of the late Marion Osborne Denney and Mabel Jackson Denney. She lived and grew up between Mount Pleasant and McClellanville.  She met her husband Phillip Dye when he was recalled for the Korean War and was stationed at the Charleston Navy Base in 1951.  Mr. and Mrs. Dye were married at the Mount Pleasant Town Hall off Pitt Street on December 6, 1952.  Her husband Phillip’s family had a successful thriving insurance business that was founded in 1872 in the small farming community of Akron, NY; near Buffalo, NY.

Phillip and Rose Marie had three sons: Stephen Henry Dye, Jonathan Bradley Dye and Christopher Osborne Dye. Phillip and Rose Marie lived and raised a family in Akron, NY so Phillip could operate the family business.  Marie loved Akron and she made many close friends over the years.  On occasion she would take weekend trips with girlfriends to New York City to enjoy shows and sightsee. Phillip sold the family business in 1968 and relocated the family to Mount Pleasant, SC.  Rose Marie was a native to this community and all her sisters and one brother lived here.  Phillip chose a new profession in the banking business.

In 1971 a new school was founded in Mount Pleasant (Trident Academy) in large part from William Detyens of Detyens Shipyard and many other large donors to assist children with learning differences. Phillip was the president of the school board at the time of the founding and Rose Marie felt a calling to the children. Mrs. Dye took classes at The Citadel and elsewhere to become certified as an LD (Language Development) teacher.  Mrs. Dye loved her profession and changed many peoples live for the better. After 22 years of teaching at Trident Academy, in 1993 Rose Marie chose to retire. She and Phillip then relocated to Landrum, SC, where they made many new close friends and enjoyed 16 years living in the Landrum community.  In 2009 upon her husbands passing, Rose Marie decided to once again move to her beloved home of Mount Pleasant to be with her remaining family members. Her hobbies included baking and playing bridge with friends. Rose Marie was also an avid bowler well into her 40’s.

She is survived by her sister, Myrtle Denney Eaddy of Mount Pleasant SC; two sons: Jonathan (Shaun) and Christopher (Cindy); grandsons: Elliott and Jacob; granddaughters: Tiffany (Elijah) and Marissa; daughter-in-law, Colleen Dye; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Rose Marie was predeceased by her son, Stephen Henry Dye; her sisters: Leona Denney Cumbee, Lillian Denney Page, Margret Denney Driggers, Ruth Denney Hardee and Ila Mae Denney Cumbee; and brother, James Denney.

The family gives thanks to all the family members and friends who made time to visit, and share thought and prayers with Mrs. Dye while she was in Hospice Care. The family is extremely grateful for the love and comfort the staff of Lutheran Hospice provided to Rose Marie and the family.
