Ronald Liddill Burbage, Sr. of Awendaw entered into eternal rest peacefully at his home on May 20, 2015.
Ronald was born on September 24, 1947, in Charleston, SC. He was predeceased by his parents, James Richard and Ladelle Bowey Burbage of Awendaw, SC.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gloria Schirmer Burbage of Awendaw, and a son, Ronald L. (Ronnie) Burbage, Jr., also of Awendaw. Surviving family include his brother James R. (Jim) Burbage Jr. and wife Barbara and nephews Christopher and Michael and their families; his brother-in-law Robert Samuel (Sam) Schirmer and wife Gina and their children Sass, Grayson and Hawkins; his sister-in-law Leize Schirmer and her children Hannah Maucere, Bubba West, and Frank Cisa; his aunt Eleanor Bowey Mason; cousins Roddy and Barbara Burbage, Devar and Susie Burbage, Margaret and John Carlisle, Tommy and Mary Jo Burbage and John and Lisa Burbage, plus many other beloved family and friends.
Ronald graduated from General William Moultrie High School in 1965, then attended Trident Technical College and The Citadel as a veteran student. He served in the Navy as a Quartermaster aboard the destroyer USS Soley DD 707. After his service to his country, Ronald began his working career with GE Credit. He then pursued a career as a commercial shrimper under the guidance of his father-in-law the late Robert 'The Hagg' Schirmer. After his shrimping career, he captained on a Charleston Harbor Pilot boat. Then he began the longest part of his career as a local sport fishing charter boat captain. Winding down his many years of seamanship, he became an insurance agent employed by his brother-in-law, Sam Schirmer, of Nationwide Insurance Company. Then together with his wife, Gloria, ran a successful catering business at Boone Hall.
Ronald was a proud member of the Hibernian Society of Charleston. He was a former member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a leader of Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award.
He truly leaves a legacy as a faithful husband and father. He was a servant of God and a true friend to all who knew him.
The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2015 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 10:30 am. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 22, 2015 in the Mount Pleasant Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Lutheran Hospice, MUSC Transplant Fund and Hollings Cancer Center.
