Romona Westbury Hale

Ramona Westbury Hale, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of Col. Lindsey Wortham Hale, US Army (Ret.) entered into eternal rest Sunday, September 23, 2018. Her Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 29, 2018 in Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street at 11:00 a.m. Entombment following in St. George Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in the church. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Mrs. Hale was born September 29, 1920 in St. George, South Carolina, daughter of James Ernest Westbury and Emma Lea Gruber Westbury. She attended public school in St. George, and was graduated Cum Laude from Limestone College, where she was a member of several honor sororities and editor of the college yearbook.

Mrs. Hale was a longtime American Red Cross volunteer, having dutifully served over 50 years in various Air Force, Army and Navy Hospitals in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, and Germany.

She was a choir member of several military chapels and Bethel United Methodist Church. She was also a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy Charleston Chapter #4, The Ladies Benevolent Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, Ladies Fuel Society, and the Garden Club of Charleston.

She is survived by her cousins: Sonya Pettersen O'Malley of Charleston, SC and Mary Grace DeAntonio of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and her longtime friends: John F. Hyland of Mount Pleasant, SC, Col. Barr Yonker of Alabama, Kate Lloyd and Betty Jane Dillon of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Nettie Walters of St. George, SC, and Patricia Harris of Ladson, SC.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Major Amos Leslie Sluder, who was the first American airman to lose his life in the Korean conflict.
