Roger I. Learn
February 5, 1935 – July 9, 2025
Roger I. Learn, 90, of Hanahan, South Carolina—formerly of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Belvidere, New Jersey—entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 9, 2025.
A memorial service honoring his life will be held on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at J. Henry Stuhr Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston, South Carolina. A gathering will follow at 12:00 p.m. to celebrate and remember Roger’s life and legacy.
Roger was born on February 5, 1935, in Belvidere, New Jersey, to the late Earl Learn and Eva Freeman Learn. A graduate of Belvidere High School, Class of 1953, he proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1960. He completed his active duty in 1957 and continued in the Naval Reserve through 1960, achieving the rank of Boiler Technician Third Class (BT3). Roger valued his time in the Navy deeply, carrying his sense of duty and service with him throughout his life.
After his military service, Roger returned to Belvidere and began his career at Hoffmann-La Roche in the quality control and maintenance department, where he worked until his retirement.
Roger was also a dedicated member of the Belvidere community. He served with the Belvidere Ambulance Corps, including as an active diver, and was a member of the initial Belvidere Pool Committee. Alongside ten other community leaders, he helped bring to life the vision and construction of the Belvidere community pool, which opened in May 1968.
Roger was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joan Spittle Learn, and his siblings, Richard Learn, Raymond Learn, and Virginia Learn Steele.
He is survived by his four sons: Roger Jr. and his wife Candace of Troy, PA; Richard of Raleigh, NC; Randy and his wife Jeneine of Hanahan, SC; and Ronald and his wife Alicia of The Villages, FL. He was a proud grandfather to twelve grandchildren—Charity Walker (Luke), Tricia Strange (Brian), Bryanna Fencil (Jared), Susan Shedden (Jake), Violet Geiser (Jordan), Roger Learn III, Devin Black (Will), Carie Jones (Mark), Tara Marlowe (Matt), Ryan Learn (Audrey), Tyler Learn, and Jenna Learn—and great-grandfather to twenty-nine great-grandchildren.
