Roberta Anne Softy Webb, 68, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina passed away on June 25, 2024, peacefully at home.
Roberta was born on August 15, 1955, to Robert A. and Millicent F. Softy in Jamaica Queens, New York. Her Dutch ancestors in the 1600s were part of the community of New Amsterdam where they farmed. This community and farmland are now Manhattan, New York.
As a child Roberta lived in Huntington, New York where she graduated from Huntington High School in 1973. Her family had a beach cottage (“Looney Dunes”) on Mako Lane, Amagansett, Long Island. Here she spent her childhood summers developing a love for all activities that sand, dunes, beaches, and the ocean could provide. She continued this tradition into adulthood, instilling this same love in her two sons and husband. One of her greatest joys was walking the beach for miles, collecting seashells and beach glass.
Roberta moved to Raleigh, North Carolina to study at the School of Design, NC State University. Here she mastered her love for graphic design and graduated in 1977 with a graphic design degree.
After college she married her sweetheart, Sherwood Lee Webb in 1979. They moved to Ridgewood, New Jersey and had two children, Lewis Ashton Webb (Alexis) and Bryson Lee Webb (Kelly). Roberta worked in Manhattan for a small but prestigious graphic design firm until the birth of her children. She then took up the greatest job of her life, which was to provide a loving family.
After living in New Jersey for ten years, they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. Here Roberta raised her children while nurturing her love for graphic design. Roberta was an artist by nature and study. She refined her own stylish bohemian couture across a lifetime of artwork, jewelry, clothing, and gardening. Roberta was a tetrachromat and incorporated beautiful colors into life whenever possible. She and her husband designed, built, and painted amazing toys for children. Roberta was a calligrapher and a prolific writer. Her letters and handmade cards to friends were considered works of art.
After living in Charlotte for twenty-four years, Roberta and Sherwood decided to spend their retirement years near their adult children in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Here she cultivated her love for gardening by creating an array of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. She loved to run, exercise, and dance. With the birth of her grandchildren, she became a devoted “Gramma.”
Roberta has seven grandchildren: Annelise Ruth Webb, Mathilda Pearl Webb, Camila Nicole Webb, Thaddeus Hart Webb, Conrad Moss Webb, Gwendolyn Leigh Webb, and Leopold Grey Webb. Roberta will live on in her grandchildren, who she adored. “Gramma” loved to disappear for hours to play with the grandchildren in their rooms, playhouses, or forts, where they would giggle and have wonderful conversations.
Roberta’s grandparents on both sides and her parents were members of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Their devotion to the church and God instilled in Roberta a lifelong deep love for God and her faith. She was an active member, serving on the board of the Christian Science Society, Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. As well as past chairman of her Christian Science Association in Chicago, Illinois.
Roberta was a kind, gentle, loving, and private individual. Her wish is not for a funeral service or memorial. She wants her family and friends to love one another and to live each day with happiness.
