Robert Hampton Zobel

January 15, 1930 — March 3, 2019

After spending the day surrounded by his children and grandchildren, Robert Hampton Zobel, Sr., 89, also known as "Honey", peacefully passed away in his sleep Sunday evening. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2019 in Lutheran Church of The Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive at 11:00 a.m. where the family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment following will be in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.

Robert was born January 15, 1930 in Charleston, South Carolina. He graduated from Porter Military Academy and was a 1951 graduate of The Citadel. After graduation he married his childhood sweetheart, Peggy, and worshipped her for 67 years. From there he went into the Air Force as a pilot. He and his "Child Bride" were stationed in Arizona and Germany. Upon his return to Charleston, he worked for MUSC and then Bird & Sons Roof Manufacturing where he retired at the age of 55. He built his dream home on Wadmalaw Island in 1987. He was known as the "Mayor" of his road and always had time to help his neighbors. He loved hunting, fishing, horseback riding and was an avid antique car enthusiast.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Zobel of Wadmalaw Island, SC; daughter, Penny Zobel Massey (Craig) of James Island, SC; two sons, Robert H. Zobel, Jr., (Marty), Larry Zobel (Kathy) all of Charleston, SC; nine grandchildren, Hap Lempesis (Laura), Jess Lempesis (Lea), Porter Massey, Bebe Z. Pickett (Tim), Robby Zobel, III (Tommy Faircloth), Travis Zobel (Lisa), Allison Z. Anderson (Jay), Lawren Z. Carter (Corey), Katy Zobel (Michael Quirk), and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Leona Zobel, his son, Chuck Zobel and his grandson, Craig Massey, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, 171 Moultrie St, Charleston, SC 29409 and/or The Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 714 Riverdale Drive, Charleston, SC 29407 where he was the last living Charter Member.
