Robert "Bob" Lincoln Thomas, 84, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Linda Sarrett Thomas died Friday, January 30, 2015. A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, March 1, 2015, St. David's Day, at Circular Congregational Church, 150 Meeting Street. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Bob was born January 11, 1931 in Rochester, New York, son of the late Robert L. and Grace Smith Thomas. He had precious memories of his boyhood friends and playing basketball in a neighbor's barn. He attended Webster (NY) High School, and The University of Michigan, from which he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Engineering. Bob was an officer of the U.S. Navy, having served during the Korean Conflict. He was a Senior Associate Engineer with Corning, Inc. and, while with Corning, Inc., spent two years in Japan on a joint venture.
His life led him to different locales including his childhood in Webster, NY, his time in Corning, NY, relaxing at his summer home in Chautauqua, NY, and then his time in Mount Pleasant, SC. Bob enjoyed reading, travel, and his leadership role in several groups. And he enjoyed being with is friends, one of whom described him as "an accomplished curmudgeon - with a heart of gold." He was, by all accounts, a natural leader and teacher.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Linda Sarrett Thomas of Mount Pleasant, SC; his children, Christopher Robert Thomas of Mount Pleasant, SC, Griffith Lee Thomas and his wife, Amy, of Winchester, VA, and Leslie Thomas Luciew and her husband, John, of Harrisburg, PA; his granddaughters, Zoe, Bronwyn, and Gemma Thomas; and his extended group of friends centered in Chautauqua, NY and at Circular Congregational Church in Charleston, SC. Bob is also survived by his two giant cats, Blue and Simba, who kept his feet warm throughout his illness, and Luqua who loved to sit on his lap. He was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Thomas, and his sister, Ruth Chamberlain.
We would like to especially thank the caregivers and care-providers of Transitions Hospice for the wonderful way they assisted Bob, and us as his family.
If Bob's life were to be summed up in three words, they would be "humble," "generous," and "loving." He possessed a gentle soul. "For truth and love most prevail over lies and hatred." - Vaclav Havel.
