Robert David Shults

November 23, 1937 — May 25, 2013

Robert David Shults, Ph.D. of Arlington, Virginia, passed away peacefully in his sleep on the evening of May 17, 2013. He was 75 years old.

David was the son of Wilbur Dotry and Eva Jones Shults, both of whom are deceased. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia and spent most of his early years there. He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Atlanta and earned the BSEE, MSEE and PhD degrees in Electronic Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also held a BS degree in mathematics and BA and MA degrees in fine arts from Georgetown University in Washington, DC. He was a gifted musician and artist as well as an exceptional engineer.

David worked for Scientific Atlanta and then Lockheed Marietta for several years after graduating from Georgia Tech, but spent most of his professional career with the Department of Defense in Washington, DC. He was privileged to be selected to attend and graduate from the National War College in D.C., as a civilian, and the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, VA. After retiring from the DoD, he worked as Senior Engineering Specialist for ManTech SRS Technologies in Arlington, Virginia. His career was filled with numerous interesting and challenging assignments, here and abroad. He thoroughly enjoyed learning about the art and culture overseas while serving the Armed Forces of the United States.

He is remembered as a very bright and knowledgeable man with many interests and experiences, and with an easy laugh that matched a wonderful sense of humor and gracious, generous heart.

He is survived by three brothers and their families: Dr. Wilbur and Sue Shults of Oak Ridge, Tennessee; James and Sharla Shults of Donalsonville, Georgia; and Paul Shults and Susan Parker of Charleston, South Carolina. Also surviving are his daughter, Dr. Stacey E. Shults, DVM of Annandale, Virginia and her husband and two sons. David is also survived by many nephews, nieces and friends.

Today, David would encourage you to meditate on the meaning of the Word found in Holy Scripture: Numbers 6:24 - 26 and John 14:6 - 7.
