Robert Bruce Shaw

Robert Bruce Shaw, age 84, passed away peacefully on January 16, 2025. Born on February 17, 1940, to Harry and Lila Shaw, Bruce lived a life marked by intellectual brilliance, professional distinction, and deep devotion to his family and community.

Bruce graduated from the University of South Carolina as well as the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he earned his LLM cum laude. He excelled as a student, serving as a member of Phi Delta Phi and the Order of Wig and Robe. He was also Law Notes Editor and Law Survey Editor for the South Carolina Law Review.

Bruce’s legal career was a testament to his tireless work ethic, sharp mind, and enduring passion for the law. He was a respected member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Bar Association, the American College of Trial Lawyers (Fellow, Chair of the SC Chapter), and the International Academy of Trial Lawyers (Fellow, Board of Directors). Among his many accolades, he was particularly proud of receiving the Robert W. Hemphill Award in 1993 and being named a South Carolina Super Lawyer from 2008 to 2015. In 2012, his client, Owens-Illinois, established the R. Bruce Shaw Distinguished Counsel Award in his honor, a testament to his extraordinary contributions to the company.

Bruce also made an indelible mark on his community. He served on the board of the South Carolina Philharmonic and later served as Commodore of the Edisto Island Yacht Club, reflecting his love for the arts and Edisto Beach.

He is remembered not only for his achievements but for his character: an intellectual giant with a dry wit that charmed family, friends, colleagues, and juries alike. A dedicated mentor to young lawyers, Bruce had a passion for history and loved sharing his legal knowledge with others.

Bruce was preceded in death by his beloved first wife, Amy. He is survived by his loving wife, Molly; his children Alice Ulmen (Rich), Robert Shaw (Cecile), and Ashley Anderson (Jay); stepchildren Simons Hane (Amy) and Darby Hane; his grandchildren Emily Anderson, Ben Anderson, Matthew Anderson, and Amy Kathryn Heard; and step-grandchildren Molly Catherine Hane and Elizabeth Shay Hane.

Bruce loved the beach, his family, his loyal dog, and his many friends. His legacy of hard work, kindness, and brilliance will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Bruce’s memory will be honored at The Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island on January 27th at 12:00, followed by a reception at the Edisto Island Yacht Club.

Donations may be made to The University of South Carolina School of Law or Animal Lovers of Edisto.
