Robert Young Scott entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, in Saluda, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held Monday, September 23, 2024, at 10:00 AM in St. Philip’s Church, 142 Church Street. The family will receive friends following the service in the Parish Hall. Private interment. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.

Bobby was born on August 24, 1959, in Charleston, South Carolina, son of James Joseph Scott, Jr. and Betty Young Scott. He attended Porter-Gaud School, and The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida, graduating in 1977. He continued his education at The Citadel where he was a member of the soccer team, graduating in 1981. From 1981 to 1991, Bobby served in the United States Army National Guard as a Communications Electronics Officer with the 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne) and in the United States Army Reserve from 1991-1995.

Bobby had a 40-year career in the telecommunications and information technology industries. He began in sales with Southern Bell and later oversaw AT&T’s sales and services operations in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa based out of Brussels, Belgium. He then joined Boston Technology to help form the firm’s European division based out of London. He served on the Supervisory Boards of AT&T France, Barphone, and Western Electric Saudi Arabia. He went on to found multiple businesses in the U.S., being recognized twice on Inc. Magazine’s 500 fastest growing companies in North America and earning Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Southeast Region Award. 

Bobby was a member of St. Philip’s Church, the Citadel Brigadier Foundation, and the Carolina Yacht Club. He served on the Porter-Gaud School Board of Trustees for nine years as Finance Chair and Chairman of the Board. He was also involved with Trident United Way.

Bobby believed that service to country and community was a responsibility. In this he led by example for his children and grandchildren, always quick to stress that no act of service is too small. He cherished his friendships which stretched to all corners of the globe and never met a stranger. He will be remembered for his generosity, adventurous spirit, humor, and most importantly, as a beloved husband, father, “Papa”, and friend. 

Bobby was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Joseph Scott, III. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ruth Gale Scott, of Charleston, SC; one daughter, Lillian Scott Greene and her husband Gregory of Dallas, TX; one son, Robert Young Scott, Jr. and his wife Shannon of New York, NY; three granddaughters, Eleanor English Greene, Louisa Landon Greene and Harriet Bowden Greene; one sister, Anne Scott Wallace of Charlotte, NC; one aunt, Constance Young Likes of Charleston, SC; three sisters-in-law, Susan Ashley Martindale of McClellanville, SC, Nancy Gaillard Osborne of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Anne Osborne Long and her husband Leonard of Kiawah Island, SC; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
