CAPT Robert Scott Newman, USN (Ret.), 61, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Kimiko Honda Newman died Thursday, April 2, 2015. His Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, April 7, 2015 in the St. Andrews Church Mount Pleasant (Historic Church), 440 Whilden Street, at 3:00 pm. Interment with full military honors will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Monday in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Scott was born November 2, 1953 in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, son of Harry Alexander Newman and the late Barbara Buck Newman. He was a graduate of The University of Florida and received a Masters degree from Georgia Institute of Technology. He served in the United States Navy for 30 years, serving with the Seabees, and retired as a Captain. Following his military service, he worked as a civil and environmental engineer with CH2M Hill. He was a VFW member, and a member of St. Andrews Church, Mount Pleasant.
He had a deep love of traveling, reading, photography, carpentry, and fishing. He traveled to 5 continents, lived in Bolivia and the Philippines, and served extensive tours in Japan, Kosovo, the United Kingdom, Italy, Iraq, and Afghanistan. He always gave generously and found someone to take care of when stationed and living overseas - whether it be a dog, cat or child.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years; his sons, Joseph Scott (Anne) Newman of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Eric Alexander (Emily) Newman of Alexandria, VA; his grandson, Finn Alexander Newman; four brothers, Bruce Newman of Jacksonville, FL, Harry J. Newman of Prospect, KY, Donald Newman of Charlotte, NC, and Gary Newman of Tampa, FL.
