Robert Joseph Murphy, Jr., 78, husband of Dona Anthony Murphy, quietly passed away early Saturday morning December, 14, 2024, following a long battle with Parkinson’s.
Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA, December 11, 1946 to the late Robert Murphy and Bertha Walczak Murphy, the oldest of four children. He is survived by his brother, Thomas Murphy of Chalfont, PA and was predeceased by his sister, Diane Tuffner and brother, John Murphy both of Philadelphia, PA.
Bob attended Father Judge High School and volunteered for service to the U.S. Army in 1964, serving four years in Germany before being honorably discharged.
He married Merle Skott Streetman and had two children: Jacqueline Anne Murphy Danielsson of Pottstown, PA and Robert Joseph Murphy III of Mt. Pleasant, SC, before her untimely death in 1977. Jackie and Joe blessed them with four grandchildren: Lukas and Marley Danielsson and Parker and Ella Murphy.
Bob began his professional career in the transportation industry with B.H. Sobelman & Co., a steamship agent in Philadelphia while attending night courses at LaSalle University where he completed a degree in business management. He spent the next 26 years in the maritime industry employed by the ocean carrier, Sea-Land Service, living and working in Europe, Asia, South Africa, Russia and various ports along the East Coast of the United States. Bob was Sea-Land’s liaison on the ground in Saudi Arabia during Desert Shield-Desert Storm working with USTRANSCOM monitoring the logistics of cargo and equipment into the country and the return of equipment to the United States.
Bob married Joanne Goodhue of Tampa, FL, and had two children born in Holland: Kiera Murphy Dare and Patrick Murphy. Kiera and Patrick now reside in Mt. Pleasant, SC and blessed Bob with five additional grandchildren: Olivia, Alexander and Henry Dare and Maeve and Quinn Murphy. He also had the pleasure of gaining a son in this marriage, Eric Greenberg of Bala Cynwyd, PA.
Bob married Dona Anthony Murphy of New Jersey in 1997 and the two moved to Houston, Texas in 2002. There he joined his eldest son in opening TXN Logistics, a trucking and logistics company which he operated until his retirement in March 2019. Bob is survived by an additional son from this marriage, Nicholas Negron of Greensboro, NC.
His Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 21, 2024, in The Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street at 12:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the church from 11:30 until the time of service. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Guests are invited to join the family at the home of Patrick and Kerry Murphy following the burial.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, PO Box 5014, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
Before his death Bob asked that the following saying be used as a remembrance of him:
“Grieve not… nor speak of me with tears… but laugh and talk of me as though I were beside you. I loved you so…’twas Heaven here with you” and “I will be in the wind that moves you.”
