Robert E. Mellard, 87, of Hanahan, SC, died Friday, March 11, 2011, peacefully at home.
Born January 19, 1924 in Charleston, SC, he was one of three children of David Loyless Mellard and Bessie Boynton Mellard. He was a US Air Force Veteran of WWII. He received his Master's Degree in Engineering from the University of Tennessee. He owned the Charleston Engineer Company for 50 years while also a professor of engineering at the Citadel.
Mr. Mellard is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margaret S. Mellard of Hanahan; five children: Susan Mellard Asher (John) of Columbia; Sandra Mellard Watts (Gary) of Columbia; Andrea S. Taylor of Mt. Pleasant; Hubert C. Smoak (Jane) of Columbia and Harold A. Smoak (Linda) of West Ashley; brother, David L. Mellard of North Charleston; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother William Mellard.
The funeral service will be held in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, Sunday, March 13, 2011 at 3:00 PM. Entombment with military honors will follow in the Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
