Robert H. McKenzie
October 27, 1948 — January 14, 2021
On Thursday, January 14, 2021, Robert H. McKenzie, Jr., husband to Barbara P. McKenzie, and father to Robert H. McKenzie, III, and Constance L.P. McKenzie (deceased), passed away at the age of 72 from a long battle with COPD. Due to the health and safety of all, services will be private at this time. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.
Bob was born on October 27, 1948, in Trenton, TN. He studied marketing at the University of Mississippi and horticulture at Trident Technical College. He was a certified nursery professional through the South Carolina Nurseryman's Association. The South Carolina & Landscape Association awarded him in 2005 the South Carolina Nursery Professional of the Year and in 2010 the Lifetime Fellow Award.
Bob began his career in marketing but in the late 1980s he decided to try something different. Because he loved to play golf, he decided he wanted to become a greenskeeper and enrolled at Trident Tech to switch careers. After working at Wild Dunes, he moved into landscaping and then to nursery management/sales. This area is where he excelled. He loved the nursery business because he loved his customers and his fellow nursery men and women. He enjoyed helping others and many have said that Bob helped or trained them to become successful or advance in their careers.
He was a wonderful and loving husband and an even more caring and fantastic father. He adored his two children (Bobby and Connie); they were his life. He was never too busy to play with them or take them on outings or trips.
In high school, Bob made first chair percussionist in the state of Tennessee. He played with the Ole Miss marching band and in the 1970s played a few seasons with the Charleston Symphony.
Bob is predeceased by his father, mother, and daughter: Robert H. McKenzie, Margaret Johnston McKenzie, and Constance L.P. McKenzie. He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. McKenzie, of 52 years of marriage; a son, Robert H. McKenzie, III, of Rock Hill, SC; sister, Ann Miller Smith, of Friendship, TN; and nephew, niece, and two great nieces and one great nephew.
The family wishes to express much gratitude to Lutheran Hospice at Franke, especially his nurse, Krysta, and the MUSC medical team; Palliative Care, Pulmonology, and Internal Medicine, for the wonderful care they provided Bob.
