Robert Julian Mappus, 89, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Perry Valda Rumph Mappus entered into eternal rest Thursday, February 4, 2021. His funeral service will be held graveside Monday, February 8, 2021 in Rumph Family Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. The family will receive family and friends Sunday, February 7, in J. Henry Stuhr Inc. Downtown Chapel from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Julian was born March 8, 1931 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Theodore William Mappus and Ernestine Rosebrock Mappus. He was a charter member and active finance committee chair of Holy Comforter Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of Holy Spirit Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Julian is survived by his daughters: Beth Mappus Stone of Charleston, SC and Julie Finn Mappus Harrington (Mitch) of Summerville, SC; son, Robert Julian Mappus, Jr. of Charleston, SC; brother, G. Frederick Mappus (Sandra) of Charleston, SC; sister, Wilma Jean Mappus of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Cambridge "Trey" Trott Stone III (Chelsea), Perry Elizabeth Tutterow (Josh), Hunter Harrington, Emily Emme Harrington and Donna Unger (Craig); and five great-grandchildren.
The day following graduation from The High School of Charleston, Julian followed in his father's footsteps and began his professional career as a new car salesman at W.T. Smith Company. His loyalty to Buick continued for over 50 years as W.T. Smith Company began its evolution to Hallman Buick, Ferneau Buick to Sentry Buick. Julian retired from Sentry Buick prior to its becoming Baker Buick, GMC, Cadillac. He received many professional service awards and was a highly revered top salesman. He was known for his calm spirit, professional demeanor, punctuality, and had many loyal customers over the years. He was often found on the car lot in his hat and became fondly known as The Man with the Hat. After retirement, he continued his many church activities and caring for his late wife. Late into his retirement, you could find him driving the golf cart at Roper Saint Francis Hospital helping patients find the proper entrance for their visit.
