Robert Edward "Red" Manning of Charleston passed away on January 22, 2019. Born on February 12, 1925, in Charleston to Bevvie Estelle Orvin and James Robert Manning, he grew up near Hampstead Mall and graduated from the High School of Charleston. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre. Afterwards, he graduated from The Citadel and began his career as a chemist, first at the National Bureau of Standards and then at Westvaco.

A lifelong member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he served as deacon, treasurer, trustee, Sunday School teacher, and catcher for the church softball team. As a young man, he played basketball for the Rinky Dinks and quarterbacked the Charleston Royals semi-pro football team. In later years, he enjoyed photography and woodworking as well as volunteering for Historic Charleston Foundation's spring house tours. He was a member of The Citadel Alumni Association and TAPPI.

Mr. Manning is survived by his beloved wife of seventy-one years, Dolores Hicks Manning; daughters Sheryl Vaughn (Elvis) and Sharon Morris (Steve); grandchildren Jennifer Vaughn Beaver (Brock) and Stephen Manning Vaughn (Lindsay); great-grandchildren Micah Beaver Adams (Ryan), Nathanael Jackson Beaver, Colin Robert Beaver, Manning Lyle Vaughn, and Leona Bee Vaughn; sister Theresa Presnell (Pat); and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and five siblings.

The family will receive friends Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1293 Orange Grove Road, Charleston. The funeral service will be at the church at 1:00 p.m., followed by burial at Live Oak Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL.
