Robert Spann Luhn, Sr., 78, of Charleston, SC passed away peacefully on the afternoon of December 22, 2025.

Robert was born on April 30, 1947, to Wesley D. Luhn and A. Kathleen (Warren) Luhn. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Spann Luhn, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Debra June (McEachern) Luhn of Columbia, SC; as well as his daughter, Jodie Marie-Luhn Almeida and his grandson, Samuel—both of Charleston.

Robert grew up in Charleston and lived his life here, rooted in the community he cherished. Robert was the youngest of “the three monkeys,” alongside his brothers Wesley “Dee” Luhn and Warren Luhn. The brothers were raised in Riverland Terrace and South Windermere. Robert attended St. Andrews High School and Palmer College. He served in the United States Army National Guard.

In the Presbyterian church, Robert served as an Elder and a Deacon. For most of his life, he was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, as was his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gustav Luhn- who immigrated from Germany. Around the time his grandson was born, Robert became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Robert worked for over 50 years in wholesale flooring with William M. Bird. Through his work, he developed lasting friendships and discovered nearly every boiled-peanut stand throughout the region.

In about 1974, Robert began religiously playing tennis Thursday afternoons with his childhood friends Harold Peterson, Wilbur Wise, and Grady LePrince. Robert lived by his father’s adage that success in life is having true friends.

Robert genuinely enjoyed people. He had a gift for learning something interesting about everyone he met. He found camaraderie—and good meals—through his involvement in the Elks Club, the German Friendly Society, the Washington Light Infantry, and the Exchange Club of Charleston. With the Exchange Club, he volunteered 40 hours each year at the Coastal Carolina Fair, an event he eagerly began counting down to at least nine months prior.

Robert showed up—for tennis matches, club meetings, friends' celebrations, school events, sports practices, music performances, award ceremonies, and more. He valued spending time with people. Robert was more likely to give fair passes or concert tickets over material gifts, preferring shared experiences and opportunities to connect.

Robert was willing to play the fool—dancing, singing, or wearing highly unusual clothes. His good-hearted sense of humor at times skirted dangerously close to inappropriate. He was loyal to his rescue dogs, enthusiastic about coupons and discounts, and absolutely content napping on the grass in the sun.

Robert was full of life. He was adored, appreciated and loved.

Arrangements for Robert’s memorial service will be announced once arranged. A private interment will be held at Second Presbyterian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Robert's memory to the Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406.

Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
