Robert Carl Kohler Sr.,91, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2021 at his home on Wadmalaw Island, SC.
Robert was born March 11, 1930 in Charleston, SC to Frederic (Fritz) Carl Kohler and Annie Louis Hammett Kohler.
Robert starting working at a young age of 11 after his father had been in work accident and could no longer work for a period of time. He took a morning and evening paper route on his bicycle for the Charleston Evening Post and The News & Courier. His routes were in West Ashley covering Edgewater Park, Stono Park and Rotherwood areas. He kept and expanded that route for 35 years as the areas grew. Eventually he was delivering as many as 1,000 papers and distributing 600 papers to racks along Savanah Highway. This was a 7 day week and 2 times daily job! For the 10 years following, he retired from home delivery but continued the racks. 5 years until his retirement he did distribution only to home carriers in Mt Pleasant.
Robert is preceded in death by a son, Robert Carl Kohler Jr. ; 2 sisters Kathleen (Kitty) Branch and Daisy Edwards.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Patrica S Kohler; his sister Barbara Mae Kohler Berry of Tempe AZ ; his stepbrother Fritz Kohler of Charleston; his daughter Carolyn Kohler Brown (Jim) of John's Island) son Albert H. Kohler (Carol) of Mt. Pleasant. Stepson Edwin Hoyt Pettus (Barbara) of Princeton WV and stepdaughter Coleen P. Strasburger (Gus) of Columbia SC, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
