Capt. Robert Byrd Kay, US Army (Ret), 93, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Kydie Hopkins Kay entered into eternal rest Sunday, December 30, 2012. A funeral service will be held Friday, January 4, 2013 in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 712 Wappoo Road, Charleston, SC at 11:00 am. Interment will be at Beaufort National Cemetery at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends Thursday, January 3, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC.,WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway from 5:00 until 7:00 pm.
Robert was born June 18, 1919 in Brooklyn, New York, son of the late Dr. Arthur W. Kay and the late Emelie Oxford Kay. He served as a Captain during WWII in the US Army and was a decorated veteran. Among his many awards and decorations, Robert was a recipient of the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Distinguished Service Medal. Robert retired as a Management Analyst with the VA Hospital with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the Military Officers of World Wars, 4th Division Association-Carolina Chapter, American Society of The French Legion of Honor and was a life member of the James Island Yacht Club. Robert was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Kydie Hopkins Kay; daughter, Kydie Kay Young of Social Circle, GA; son, Stephen J. Kay (Patricia) of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by a son Robert W. Kay.
