Robert "Bob" Maurice Jones, Sr., 86, of Summerville, entered eternal life on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, surrounded by family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Knightsville United Methodist Church. The family will receive visitors in the Family Life Center of the Church beginning at 3 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL.
Jones was born November 5, 1927, in Galeton, PA. He was the son of Edgar William Jones and Bernice Emma Sager. Bob was a graduate of Nichols High School in Nichols, NY, and he was a Mason. He served in the US Navy Sea Bees from 1945 to 1946 and was stationed in the Philippines. He achieved the rank of Baker 3rd Class during World War II.
He married Doris Elaine Baldwin in 1947 and they had four children. Jones and his wife moved to Charleston in 1961. In New York, he worked at the American Bridge Company and apprenticed with his father in the plumbing business. In Charleston, he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard until his retirement as a sheet metal mechanic.
In the community, he volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America for over 30 years, working on the unit, district and council level. He received the Silver Beaver Award, the Vigil Honor and the E. Urner Goodman Founder's Award. He was a charter member of the Unali'Yi Lodge 236, Order of the Arrow. As an Eagle Scout counselor, he guided many young Boy Scouts along the trail to earning the Eagle Scout Award. He also served as Scoutmaster and District Commissioner and on various adult training staffs for Scouting. Jones volunteered at Knightsville United Methodist Church as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and served on the Administrative Board and Council on Ministries. For his work bringing the Boy Scout program to the church, the United Methodist Church presented him with the Cross and Flame Award.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris; his parents; his sister, Barbara; and his daughter, Beverly. He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Patee of North Charleston and Wendy Cole (Fred) of Wasilla, AK; his son, Robert M. Jones, Jr. of Ladson; four grandchildren, English Pike (Brad) of Cherry Hill, NJ; Christopher Patee (Carla) of Santee, SC; Michael Patee of Abilene, TX and Laura Earley (Zach) of Jasper, AL; and two great-grandchildren, Cooper and Charleston Pike of Cherry Hill, NJ. He will be missed by his four-legged buddy, Daisy, who he loved very much.
