Robert Allan James

September 21, 1920 — September 29, 2011

Robert Allan James, 91, husband of the late Sue Gaillard Brown James of Mt. Pleasant, SC, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2011. Bob was a devoted husband for 61 years until Sue's death in 2006. 


The relatives and friends of Robert James are invited to attend his Memorial Service on Monday, October 3, 2011 in the Rodenberg Chapel at Franke @ Seaside at 12:30 pm.  Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. The family will receive friends in the narthex of the Chapel after the service. 


Bob was born on September 21, 1920 in Erie, PA, son of the late Howell Llewellyn James and Cora Swan James. He served his country proudly in World War Two as a flight instructor in the Army Air Corps.  After the war, he graduated from Grove City College with a BS in Chemistry and later graduated from the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program.  He spent over forty years working for PPG Industries in various management positions at its headquarters in Pittsburgh, in multiple locations around the country and twice overseas. He was always an active community leader and the best tennis player everywhere he lived.  His family admired his fearlessness in taking on any difficult new work assignment and his lifelong love for learning and teaching, which he exhibited right to the end of his full life.


He is survived by his daughter, Lindsey James Butler of Mt. Pleasant, SC; his sons, Robert Allan James, Jr. of Jupiter, FL, William Stephen James of San Clemente, CA and Thomas Lipscomb James of Charlotte, NC; and by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by three of his siblings, Margaret Annette James of San Francisco, CA, Howell Lester James of Erie, PA and Janet James Hill of Chadds Ford, PA.  He was predeceased by his brother, John Douglas James of Erie, PA.  Bob also left behind his good friend and companion, Bette Hansen of Mt. Pleasant, SC.
