Robert E. Helgesen, 74, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Bette Ehrman Helgesen passed away on Saturday, November 8, 2014 in his home, surrounded by his wife and children. His Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, November 16, 2014 in the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street. Interment will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
Bob was born December 20, 1939 in Long Island City, New York, son of the late Edwin and Agnes Morris Helgesen. He graduated from C.W. Post College and worked at Grumman Aerospace for 40 years. During Bob's time at Grumman he worked on the Lunar Module and EA6B Navy jet.
He and his wife of 55 years, Bette, retired to Mt. Pleasant, SC in 1999. Bob was an avid golfer and a member of both the Charleston Men's Chorus and the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church Choir. For the last few years, Bob was a reading buddy at Jennie Moore Elementary School. He loved joining the children at lunch for fun and jokes.
Bob is survived by his wife, Bette; his son, Robert Helgesen, Jr. and his wife, Liz; his daughter, Barbara Ruscetta and her husband, Paul; and five wonderful grandchildren, Samantha, Casey, Evan, Emma, and Jack.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to be used for the supply closet at Jennie Moore Elementary School for the Creative Arts, 942 Whipple Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
