Robert Francis Baker

Robert Francis Baker, 83, of Charleston, South Carolina, died on June 10, 2026. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Born on December 11, 1942, in Florence, South Carolina, Robert, known to his friends as Bobby or Bob, was the son of the late Margaret Cannon Tiencken and Robert Francis Baker.

Bobby grew up in Pinopolis, South Carolina before attending The University of the South. He moved to Aix-en-Provence after graduating at age 20, where he was drawn to the wine trade, a pursuit that reflected his discerning palate and pleasure in bringing people together. He later built a distinguished career as a trusted advisor in the investment banking industry, earning a reputation for sound judgment, quiet integrity, and wise counsel. Bobby was a respected leader and an early pioneer of financial communications on Wall Street, advising Salomon Brothers, Credit Suisse First Boston, and HSBC, among others, while generously mentoring generations of colleagues.

Yet those who loved him will remember him less for what he did than for how he lived. Bobby approached the world with boundless curiosity and enthusiasm. An avid reader, devoted traveler, gifted raconteur, and generous host, he took pleasure in ideas, music, conversation, and nature. He lived for many years in New York and London, cities that suited his appetite for culture, history, and lively exchange. He spent much of his life in Burgundy, where he embraced the slower rhythms of daily life: gardening, visiting local markets, cooking and dining with friends.

He had a keen appreciation for life's simple pleasures and a rare ability to see things as they were, finding humor even in life's disappointments and reversals. He never met a stranger, delighted in the company of others, and had a gift for making life feel more interesting and amusing for everyone around him.

His friendships spanned decades and continents. To family, friends, and colleagues, he was a source of wisdom, laughter, and companionship. He remained deeply engaged with the world until the end, never losing his appetite for learning and storytelling.

Bobby will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Eliza Holladay of Washington, DC; his son, Belton Baker of Palm Beach, Florida; his three beloved grandchildren, Cannon Holladay, Charlton Holladay, and Belton Baker Jr.; his brother, John Tiencken; and the many friends whose lives he enriched along the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Mary Tiencken.

In keeping with Bobby's joie de vivre, family and friends will gather this winter in Charleston to celebrate a life well lived.
