Lt. Colonel Robert Samuel Dunbar, USAF (Ret.), 95, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of the late Madelyn Huxford Dunbar, entered into eternal rest Saturday, February 6, 2016. The family will receive friends Tuesday, February 9, 2016, in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, February 10, 2016, in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, at 10:00 a.m.with interment following in Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC, at 1:00 p.m.
Robert was born December 31, 1920 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Deryll Kell Dunbar and Bessie Lee Rourk Dunbar. He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lt. Colonel after 29 years of serving his country during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam War. During WWII, he was a Prisoner of War in Germany. Robert was a Mason, a member of the Ex-POW Society, a member of the SC Genealogical Society and exemplified being a member of the "Greatest Generation".
He is survived by his son, Robert S. Dunbar, Jr. (Hazel) of Warner Robins, GA; three grandchildren: Robert S. Dunbar, III, USN. (Melanie), Sarah E. Brooks, and Thomas Andrew Dunbar (Luna); four great-grandchildren: Toby, Allison, Sammy, and Marlow. Robert is also survived by a special friend, Louise Miness.
