Robert was born June 5, 1931 in Newark, Ohio, son of Robert Fitzsimmons and Ethel Hall Deal. His parents divorced in 1935, and the care of Robert and his brother was graciously and lovingly supplemented by Ethel's sisters Hazel, Helen and Mable and by their mother Emma. In 1939, Ethel married a wonderful man who became father to Robert, Harry H. Gill, a local grocer. He cared for Ethel's sons like they were his own, teaching them about the importance of honesty, honor and an appreciation for hard work and familial love.
Robert graduated from Granville high school in 1950. He then proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1951 - 1955 serving during the Korean war. After the war he returned to Newark, Ohio and became a draftsman engineer working at Newark Ohio Company and Rockwell International. In 1977 he moved to Mt. Pleasant, SC to work at Cummins Engine Co and Robert Bosch Company retiring in 1996.
When he returned to Newark after discharging from the Air Force he met and married Marlene McCullough. He will be remembered for the way he loved his family and community. He volunteered on the U.S.S. Yorktown for over 20 years and with Marlene, served as a greeter at Seacoast church.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marlene; three daughters, three grandsons, and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers, Kenneth Deal and James Deal.
