Robert Walter Cope

Robert Walter Cope, Sr., 86, of Charleston, SC, widower of Gloria E. Cope, entered into eternal rest Monday, January 20, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, January 25, 2014, in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery with military honors, 604 Fort Johnson Road, James Island. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel.

Robert was born April 24, 1927 in Charleston, SC, son of the late Arthur Gilbert Cope, Sr. and Mary Richbourg Cope. He was an Army veteran serving as a Merchant Marine in WW II, he served as a police officer with the City of Charleston from 1950-1954, and retired as a boiler plant operator in the Powerhouse at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and attended Northwood Assembly Church.

He is survived by his two daughters, Diane Hines (Joshua R.) of Charleston, SC, and Geraldine "Jeannie" James of Summerville, SC; two sons, Robert W. Cope, Jr. "Rusty" (Linda H.) of Hanahan, SC and Arthur "Art" Cope (Cindy) of Charleston, SC; a brother, Henry J. Cope, Sr.of Charleston, SC; 15 grandchildren: Tricia Langston Shoemaker (Kevin), Teresa Langston Wells, Julie James, Alena James, Vincent James, Andrea James, Robert W. Cope III "Reed", Samantha Ferrera, Brenda Shellito (John), Kendall Cope, Grayson Cope, Kaitlynn Cope, Christian Cope, Alexandra Cope and Jamie Metz; and 11 great-grandchildren: Wyatt Shoemaker, Cullen Shoemaker, Tristan Wells, Kaden Wells, Victoria Thomas, Trinity Washington, Kyle Shellito, Kourtney Shellito, Katelyn Shellito, Kristin Hill, and Taylor Mise. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Wilson C. James, and his grandson, Michael R. James.
