Robert (Bob) Hasselle Bowles, M.D., 79, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Elizabeth Pritchard Bowles, entered into eternal rest Friday, August 19, 2022. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, August 25, 2022 in St. Philip's Church, 142 Church Street at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in the churchyard. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Bob was born September 3, 1942 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, son of the late Bowlman Tarleton Bowles and Gladys Hasselle Bowles. He married Elizabeth, in 1963 and together they have three children.
Bob received his Bachelors of Science and his Masters in Science degrees from the University of South Carolina and completed his M.D. at the Medical University of South Carolina. Bob completed his internship with the Medical University in 1972 and went on to become an orthopedic resident from 1972-1975. He served as Chief Orthopedic from 1975-1976 and completed his Fellowship in 1976. During his time at the Medical University, Bob served as a Captain in the Army Charleston County Medical Society, the Charleston Orthopedic Society, the Medical Society of South Carolina and the South Carolina Medical Association. He was affiliated with the Shrine Hospital in Greenville, SC, the Charleston Naval Regional Medical Center, St. Francis Xavier Hospital, Roper Hospital, Roper Hospital North, the Medical University of South Carolina and AMI - East Cooper Community Hospital and he also served on the South Carolina State Board of Medical Review. He was also a proud member of the Carolina Yacht Club, The Order of the Cincinnati and Agricultural Society.
Bob is survived by his wife of almost 59 years, Elizabeth; daughter, Elizabeth B. Walker (Chip) of Charleston, SC; two sons: Robert H. Bowles, Jr. of Seabrook Island, SC and Coleman H. Bowles (Kris) of Charleston, SC; eight grandchildren: Allie Walker Brogan (Jay), Robert H. Bowles III, C.J. Walker, Reese Bowles, Coleman Walker, Cashiel Bowles, Brooke Bowles and Sully Bowles; one great-grandson, J.J. Brogan; and brother, Bowlman T. Bowles (Nancy) of Richmond, VA. Bob also had numerous nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his sister, Kimball B. Lauritizen who is survived by Bruce Lauritizen.
