Robert Haig Mathewes, Sr., 78, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Brenda Richardson Mathewes passed away on Sunday, November 9, 2014. A Celebration of Bob's Life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 14, 2014, in the J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Interment at Live Oak Memorial Gardens will be held at a later date.
Bob was born November 25, 1935 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late Richard Haig Mathewes and Edith Cone Mathewes. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and when he returned home, he attended the College of Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was an avid Clemson fan and loved to volunteer with the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed reading and everything about history, but more than anything, he enjoyed his grandchildren and being involved in what interested them.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Brenda R. Mathewes; his son, Bobby Mathewes and his wife, Kim of Mount Pleasant, SC; his daughter, Mary Mathewes Kassis and her husband, Mark of Smyrna, GA; his grandchildren, Lauren Mathewes, Trey Mathewes, Katie Kassis, Kimberly Kassis, Tanner Mathewes, and Cole Mathewes; and his brothers, John "Nick" Mathewes of Columbia, SC and Steve Mathewes of Biloxi, MS.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to the Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 12-8, 196 Tradd Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
