Robert J. Barkus, 87, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of the late Paula Ellen Stafford Barkus, died peacefully at his home Friday, January 15, 2016. A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 23, 2016 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, at 2:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mt. Pleasant Chapel.
Robert was born July 18, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late Albert John Barkus and the late Mary Elizabeth Barkus. He was a WWII veteran who entered into the Merchant Marines at the age of 16. He was a Mason and a long standing member of the Masonic Lodge. Robert was active in politics while living in Islip, NY in the 1960's where he worked for the Town of Islip and became Deputy Supervisor. He then went on to further his education and became very accomplished in his commercial real estate career. He enjoyed volunteering on the U.S.S. Yorktown.
He is survived by his daughters, Gail B. Nutt and her husband, Ted, of Mount Pleasant, SC, and Kristine Barkus of Lynchburg, VA; his sons, Stephen Barkus and his wife, Diana, of Newbury Park, CA, and Paul Barkus and his wife, Christine, of New York, NY; eight grandchildren, William Barkus, Natalie Barkus, Warren Nutt, Mackenzie Nutt, Austin Nutt, Alex Blencowe, Hannah Blencowe, and Stephen Barkus, Jr.; and one great-grandchild, Houston Franklin.
