Robert Eugene Allen, 93, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Caroline Pitts Allen and Ruth Gaskins Allen, entered into eternal rest on June 27, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL at 11am. Interment services will be held in Live Oak Memorial Gardens with military honors. The family will receive friends in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel Monday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm.
Bob was born May 27, 1920 in Maryville, Missouri, the son of William Henry Allen and Cora Mertia Knopp Allen. He graduated from Maryville High School in 1938 and was a member of the 1937 undefeated Maryville High School Football team. He enlisted in the Missouri National Guard in 1938 while attending Northwest Missouri State College. He transferred to the United States Army in 1940 and subsequently entered pilot training in 1942. He flew 30 missions over Europe, including two on D-Day as a co-pilot in a B-17. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Four Oak Leaf Clusters. Following World War II he graduated from Northwest Missouri State and was an educator in several public schools. He became a civilian instructor with the Department of Defense. He retired from the Charleston Air Force Base in 1982. He was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church.
He is survived by his son, Col. (Ret.) Robert C. Allen (Linda) of Eutawville, SC; daughter, Dr. Vicki A. Callahan (John) of Huntington Beach, CA; three step-sons, Dr. Ronald Gaskins (Beverly) of Bruceton Mills, WV; Rodney Gaskins (Esther) of Charleston, SC; Dana Gaskins (Jane) of Charleston, SC; and two grandsons, Robert W. Allen (Kristie) of Slidell, LA, Robert C. Allen, II (Sonya) of Savannah, GA; twelve step grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. Robert was predeceased by a daughter, Rosemary M. Allen.
