Rita Murray Benson

Rita Murray Benson, 72, of Johns Island, South Carolina, wife of Robert Neil Benson, entered into eternal rest Monday, July 21, 2025.

Rita was born July 21, 1953 in Durham, North Carolina, daughter of the late Thomas Murray and Phyllis Terrell Murray. In 2023, Rita and Neil moved to Johns Island to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Prior to this move, Rita and Neil raised their two children in Hillsborough, North Carolina, where they resided for 25 years. After 30 years of service at Duke Hospital, Rita fulfilled a long-standing dream of hers: to retire and live at the beach. In 2008, Rita and Neil moved to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina where she truly lived her life to its fullest. Rita had a steadfast faith in God and practiced her faith daily. She was a true patron of the community, volunteering with Belin Methodist Church among other organizations. One of her biggest joys in life was spending time with family and friends at the beach - she knew the perfect formula for a good beach set-up. Rita also loved dancing (especially to the Carolina shag), listening to music, playing tennis, taking walks, and spending as much time as possible with her family, especially her grandchildren, who both loved her dearly.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Amanda (Doug) Peterson; son, Rob (Kirby) Benson; grandson, Sawyer Peterson; granddaughter, Carrie Ann Benson; sisters, Tina (Rick) Thompson, Gina (Steve) Katz; brothers, Ray (Geert) Murray, Jay (Leiah) Murray; brother-in-law, Ken (Dawn) Benson; sister-in-law, Beth (John) Naron; as well as many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews..

In lieu of a service, Rita requested a Celebration of Life for family and close friends, which will be held at a later date.

"Though has turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou has loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness." - Psalms 30:11, RSV
