Richardine "Denie" Jenkins Gourley, 85, of Charleston, South Carolina, widow of William Gale Gourley and beloved Mom and sister, entered into eternal rest Friday, May 9, 2014.
Her graveside service will be held Tuesday, May 13, 2014 in St. John's Parish Churchyard, 3673 Maybank Highway at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Denie was born December 31, 1928 in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of the late Daniel Francis Jenkins and Anna Walpole Jenkins. She was a member St. John's Parish Church, Johns Island. Denie was a graduate of St. John's High School and was employed at Jenk's Outboard Service for many years. She will always be remembered for her wit and as a loving and caring person who was always willing to give of herself to help others. She was never afraid to speak her mind and take a stand for what she believed in. Paul Harvey even mentioned her on his show when she took the City of Charleston to court in her fight against a leash law for cats. She loved going to Ryan's every night and having dinner with her friends. She was one of a kind and everyone loved her.
She is survived by her son, William Gale Gourley, Jr. (Janis) of Jacksonville, NC; daughter-in-law, Rita A. Balaban of Durham, NC; five grandchildren, Brian G. Gourley, Tracy E. Gourley, Sarah J. Gourley, Daniel F. Gourley, II and R. Jackson Gourley; three sisters, Ann Jenkins Agard of Charleston, SC, Frances Jenkins Atkinson (William) of Mullins, SC and Carmen Jenkins Bentz of Johns Island, SC and several nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her beloved son, Daniel Francis Gourley; two brothers, Benjamin Roper Jenkins and wife, Eleanor and D. F. Jenkins, Jr. and wife, Hilmer.
