Richard Allen Wooden

Richard A. Wooden, 89, of Lexington, South Carolina, husband of Alice Eloise Wooden, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, January 13, 2021. His Graveside service will be held 1:00 pm, Sunday, January 17, 2021, in Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. Service can be viewed live streamed here https://youtu.be/ylh6mkQst-g. Richard was born October 17, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland, son of the late Clarence E. Wooden and Thelma Reynolds Wooden. He was in the United States Navy, retired in September 1970 after 22 years of service. Among his decorations was the Navy Meritorious Medal, Army Commendation Medal and Vietnam Service Medal. He also retired from the Trident Technical College in June of 1992, where he was the Bookstore Manager. He also taught Business and Management courses as an adjunct Professor.
Richard was educated through high school in the public school system in Maryland. He has earned an Associate Degree in Management from Trident Technical College, a Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Education from Southern Illinois University and a Master's degree in Business and Management from Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri.
Richard is a member of St. Mark Methodist Church where he has served as Chairman of the Administrative Board as well as on many Boards and Committees. He also served as a Lay Pastor and was a member of the choir.
Richard was a life member of LaCandeur Lodge No. 36 in Charleston, now merged with Mariner Lodge No. 2, having served as Master twice in 1972 and 1977. He served the Grand Lodge of Masons in South Carolina as District Deputy Grand Master of the First Masonic District, as Masonic Education Chairman for the First, Second and Third Districts, and as Masonic Services Representative for the Hospital Visitation program for the First, Second and Third Masonic Districts. He was also representative of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina near the Grand Lodge of Bolivia. On November 24, 1979, Richard received the Scottish Rites Highest Honor and became 33° Inspector General Honorary.
In July 1993 he was appointed by the S.G.I.G as General Secretary of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of the Valley of Charleston, South Carolina where he served for a total of 15 years. He was a member of the following: York Rite Bodies in Charleston, Carolina Chapter No. 1 R.A.M. Enoch Council No. 1 Royal and Select Masters, and South Carolina Commandery No. 1, Knights Templar. Past Sovereign Master of Charles Towne Council No. 195 A.M.D., Past Governor, Charles Towne College No. 113, York Rite Sovereign College and received the Order of the Purple Cross in 1997. Past Sovereign, The Saints John Conclave Red Cross of Constantine, Past President of Charleston Chapter No. 28 National Sojourners, Past Commander Heroes of 76. And was also a member of Omar Shrine Temple where he was a Past President of the Ritualistic Divan and Past President of the Past Masters Unit.
He also belonged to the following Bodies: Royal Order of Scotland, the Washington Light Infantry, Elks Lodge No. 242 in Charleston, American Legion Post 179, and Stonewall Jasper Lodge No. 6, Knight of Pythias.
Richard is survived by his wife, along with his daughter, Sharon (Jack) Self of Columbia, SC; he was predeceased by his son, Richard "Ric" Wooden, Jr. in 2019. His brother, Clarence (Shirley) Wooden of St. Michaels, MD; granddaughters Jacobi "Angela" Caldwell of Boerne, TX, and Dr. Jennifer (Charles) Dickey of Roanoke, VA; three great-grandchildren, Annalisa, Aidan, and Bryce as well as many nieces and nephews.
