Battalion Fire Chief Richard Theodore Kopf, 78, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Patricia A. Kopf entered into eternal rest Friday, June 4, 2021. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, June 8, 2021 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, at 1 PM. Interment will follow at White Church Cemetery, Highway 165, Ravenel, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends Monday, June 7, 2021 in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel from 5-7 PM.
Richard was born March 25, 1943 in Bridgewater, New Jersey, son of the late Theodore R. Kopf and Anna Marie Polachek Kopf. He was a member of the first graduating class of Bridgewater-Raritan High School and began his career in fire service as a volunteer firefighter with the Green Knoll Volunteer Fire Department. Following graduation from high school, Richard enlisted in the United States Air Force and served on active duty for six years. In 1968 he joined the City of Charleston Fire Department where he transferred to the James Island Fire Department May 15th, 1974. Following retirement, Richard became an instructor at the South Carolina Fire Academy where he spent 20 years as an instructor and retired as the Regional Training Manager.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Patricia Kopf of Charleston, SC; daughter, Krystle Sutton (Bo) of Aiken, SC; grandson Lawrence "Hayes" Sutton; step granddaughter, Kelsey Parkhurst; step great-grandchildren, Eugene Levi Crider and Vivian Crider; cousins, nephews, nieces, and extended family to include Rhonda and Ron Alexander with their children Bryn Alexander (Tiffany) and Allison Fowler (Aaron).
He is predeceased by his stepsons John Edwin Britton Jr., Eugene E. Parkhurst, and a sister, Barbara Charlotte Kopf.
