Obituary

Richard Lee Schreadley passed away on May 5, 2026 in Marietta, Georgia. He was 95 years old. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rhys and Michelle Schreadley, of Marietta, Ga., two granddaughters, Cindy L. Stone of Charleston, and Rory Lane Schreadley of Fairburn, GA, and two great-grandsons, Grayson and Parker, His wife, Doris, pre-deceased him in August 2019 after a marriage of nearly 57 years.

He was born in Harrisburg, PA, raised on a small farm, and educated in a one-room county school. He graduated from Dickinson College with a BA in English and History. He later attended, under Navy sponsorship, the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. At Fletcher he earned two Masters and a PhD. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a seaman recruit, was promoted through the ranks and commissioned as an Ensign. He retired as a commander with 25 years of service. He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His naval duties included three commands at sea and a year “in country” in Vietnam.

After his retirement from the Navy, he was hired as a reporter by The News and Courier in Charleston and several years later was named editor of the Charleston Evening Post. When the two papers combined their newsrooms, he was promoted to executive editor of both papers.

He was the author of three published books: From the Rivers to the Sea, The US Navy in Vietnam; Valor and Virtue, The Washington Light Infantry in Peace and in War; and Intervention, The Americans in Haiti, 1915-1934.

He was a past-president of the Country Club of Charleston and co-founder and chairman of the Foreign Affairs Forum (now the World Affairs Council of Charleston). For many years he was active in Charleston’s Footlight Players. He was a long-time member of the Washington Light Infantry and the German Friendly Society.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2026 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. at the J. Henry Stuhr Downtown Chapel at 232 Calhoun Street, Charleston. His remains will be interred with those of his wife at Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to organizations currently engaged in Alzheimer’s research.
