Richard Steven Rosen, 77, husband of Marianne Way Rosen, passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2026. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, on August 15, 1949, Richard Rosen was the son of the late Morris and Ida Rosen. He grew up in Charleston, attended Charleston County public schools, graduating from Rivers High School in 1967. He received a B.A. degree from Tulane University in 1971 and received his J.D. degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1975 where he was a Member of the Society of Wig and Robe and the University of South Carolina Law Review. He was a member of Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim.

Mr. Rosen began his law practice on Broad Street in Charleston in 1975. He practiced law with his father Morris, his brother Robert, and his sister-in-law Susan for many years as a partner in Rosen, Rosen & Hagood, LLC, which later became Rosen Hagood, LLC. His work included a general civil litigation practice in all state and federal courts and before administrative agencies until 2019 when he retired from the practice of law. Mr. Rosen was admitted to practice in South Carolia, the U.S. District Court for the District of S.C., the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Rosen served on the South Carolina Judicial Council from 1987 to 2000 and was President of the South Carolina Bar from 2002 to 2003. He maintained the highest professional rating in the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory and was listed in Super Lawyers (Top 25 Lawyers in the State of SC) and in Best Lawyers in America (in the categories of Commercial Litigation, and Securities Litigation, and was “lawyer of the year” in Litigation -Trusts and Estates in 2013 and 2016 and Personal Injury Litigation-Plaintiffs in 2014). He also was a member of the Charleston County Bar Executive Committee (1982-83), the South Carolina Bar Board of Governors, and Chairman of the House of Delegates. Mr. Rosen was also a member of the South Carolina Trial Lawyers Association, the American Association for Justice, the American Board of Trial Advocates (past President of the SC Chapter), and the Charleston Lawyer’s Club (past President). He also received the Leadership in Law Award from Lawyers Weekly in 2009.

Popular with his peers, he had many and varied friends. He particularly liked to recall his attendance at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. He also had a love for family, music, and travel.

Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Dr. Marianne Way Rosen; his son John E. Rosen of Folly Beach; daughter Chandler Bold Winthrop, granddaughters Athena Bold and Cassidy Winthrop, and grandson John E. Bold, all of Charleston; his sister Debra Rosen and brother-in-law Steven Stephens of Mill Valley, CA; his brother and sister-in-law, Robert N. and Susan Rosen of Charleston; his stepmother Betty Rosen of Charleston; nieces, Annie Rosen and her husband Jonathan Torre of Charleston; Alexandra Gourvitch and her husband Daniel, of New York; and nephew Ernest William Rosen and his wife Schyler of New York. He is predeceased by his son Joshua Dylan Rosen.

The family would like to thank Miguel Guthrie with Positive Aging, LLC and Mary Lynn Hursey who provided exceptional care during Mr. Rosen’s last years.
