Richard (Dick) Burris Kent, 83, of Summerville, SC, passed away on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. He was a retired Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and retired instructor at Trident Technical College and The Citadel.
Dick was born in Jacksonville, FL, a son of Artis Lane Kent and Thelma Cunningham Kent. He was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. After earning his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Florida, he entered the U.S. Air Force and began his flying and engineering careers. Dick flew assorted heavy aircraft and served a tour in Vietnam. He and his family moved to Charleston where he served as the Base Civil Engineer at Charleston AFB, SC until he retired from the service. Dick was awarded several medals during his 34 year service career including the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry (Star).
Dick was privileged to teach at The Citadel for four years where he pioneered the 2+2 program with Trident Technical College. He then taught at Trident to coordinate the Civil Engineering Technology and Transfer programs until his second retirement.
Dick is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Gill Kent; his daughter, Katherine V. Kent; his brother Robert C. Kent of Jacksonville, FL; and three grandchildren. His son, Richard B. Kent, Jr. predeceased him.
He will be buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
