Richard Grandison Howard

November 21, 1936 — April 7, 2022

Pawleys Island

Richard Grandison Howard, age 85, of Pawleys Island, South Carolina died at home on the morning of April 7, 2022.

Born November 21, 1936, in Darlington, South Carolina, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Juanita Graham Howard, and the brother of the late William Thomas Howard, Jr.  He graduated from St. Johns High School, then earned his degree from The Citadel, Company L, in 1958.  His professional career was long and varied, ranging from the stockyard to stock brokerage, then to real estate, timberland, and land management.  Unlike many of his contemporaries, he never got around to retiring. He served on numerous boards and committees, including Brookgreen Gardens and St. James Brick Church. An avid outdoorsman, he was fond of the forests and waters all over South Carolina, especially Witherspoon Island, a family property in Darlington County, and a place he frequented since his early childhood.

He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Kathleen “Snoots” Green Howard, two daughters, Kathleen Howard Dowis (Chip) of Charleston, SC, Helen Elizabeth Howard of Sullivan’s Island, SC, and one son, Richard Grandison Howard, Jr. (Martha) of Raleigh, NC.  His three grandchildren, George Dowis, Grandison Howard, and Addie Howard affectionately referred to him as “Buddy.”  He will be missed by his friend Fitz Lee Howard, an energetic black Labrador retriever.

He will be remembered by countless friends and relatives for his appreciation of good food, good stories, and lasting friendships, including those in McClellanville, his home away from home.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 11 at the old church, All Saints Church, 3560 Kings River Road, Pawleys Island, SC.

Memorials may be made to St. James Brick Church, P.O. Box 123, McClellanville, SC 29458, or to The Howard Family Scholarship at The Citadel, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409.
