Richard James "Dick" Green, 85, husband of Dorothy Tiencken Green, died June 23 in Lumberton, N.C.
Mr. Green was born Dec. 26, 1926, in Camden, N.J., but he grew up in Fernandina Beach, Fla. There he played American Legion baseball and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy.
He attended the Georgia Military Academy and earned an associate's degree in 1944. He joined the U.S. Naval Air Corps in January 1945 and served in the Pacific Theatre until his honorable discharge in August 1946. He attended The Citadel as a veteran student and earned a bachelor's degree in 1951.
Mr. Green had worked for the Carnation Company and the Citizens and Southern National Bank, both in Charleston, SC and retired as accountant auditor for the City of Charleston.
He was active in sports throughout his life, playing baseball, basketball, football and golf. As a standout shortstop for The Citadel baseball team, he was nearly signed by the New York Yankees. He also played baseball in the Charleston City League.
Mr. Green was best known in Charleston as an accomplished golfer who played in many local tournaments. He qualified and played in the U.S. Golf Association's Amateur Public Links Championship in Dallas in 1968 and in New Jersey in 1973.
He was a member of the Stono River Golf Club and the Arion Society.
He is survived by a son, Richard Green Jr. of the Turks and Caicos Islands; two daughters, Helen Musselwhite of Lumberton, N.C., and her husband, Robert Musselwhite, and Marcia Smith of Charleston, S.C.; four grandchildren, John Coville Jr. of Charleston, S.C., Jonathan Green of Charleston, S.C., Garen Smith of Richland, N.Y., and Kevin Smith of Goose Creek, S.C.; and two great grandchildren, Christopher Smith and Olivia Smith of Richland, N.Y.
Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. June 27 at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. The funeral service will be 1 p.m. June 28 at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.
