Richard "Dick" Scott Pate

Richard Scott Pate, 70, of Charleston, South Carolina (formerly of Annapolis, Maryland), passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014. His memorial service will be held at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben Street, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, 29464, on Monday, May 12, 2014, at 2 pm.

Richard "Dick" Pate was born to Mary and Hillery Pate on July 4, 1943, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He graduated from Indiana State University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation from the Naval Aviation Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida, in 1967, he was commissioned an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He served three years of active duty on the staff of the Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, in San Diego, California. In February, 1970, he joined Cummins Engine Company, Inc. in Columbus, Indiana. In 1994, he became President/CEO and principal owner of Cummins Power Systems, a distributor of Cummins and Onan power products in Maryland, Northern Virginia/Washington, DC, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New Jersey. Throughout his career and life, he served on the boards of many charitable organizations, including The Living Classrooms Foundation/The Crossroads School in Baltimore, Maryland, and The Maryland Therapeutic Riding Association in Annapolis, Maryland. After his retirement in 2008, he served on the board of Cummins Southern Plains in Dallas, Texas. He was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church in South Carolina, the Annapolis Yacht Club in Maryland, and The Daniel Island Club in South Carolina. Dick was an avid kayaker, fly fisherman, boater, and golfer.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kathleen Jennings Pate; his daughter Amy Hyatt, her husband Michael, and their two children William and Grayer; his daughter Ashley Brosey, her husband Matthew, and their two children Henry and Mimi, all of Charleston, South Carolina. He is also survived by his mother, Mary Henderson of Terre Haute, Indiana; a sister, Becky Harvey of San Antonio, Texas; and step siblings, Marla Farris of Greencastle, Indiana, and Kim Henderson of Columbus, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his father, Hillery Pate.
