Richard was born January 4, 1920 in Summerville, South Carolina, son of the late J. Frederick Bischoff and Marguerite Johnstone Bischoff. A graduate of Clemson University-Class of 1941, he was a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army and was part of America's Greatest Generation. Richard worked as a chemical engineer at Mobil Chemical. He was also a Professor of Chemistry at The Citadel for two years. He was a member of the Arion Society, Deutscher Bruderlicher Bund, the Scottish Society of Charleston, and was a Clemson Extension Master Gardener emeritus. He was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and he was a founding member and was instrumental in helping to obtain the charitable status for Meals on Wheels.

He is survived by his sons, Alan B. Bischoff (Carol) and Richard J. Bischoff, Jr., both of Mt. Pleasant, SC; son-in-laws, Gary Dobson and Jim Blackwell; seven grandchildren, Nicholas Bischoff, Olivia Bischoff, Christian Bischoff, Melissa Peckham (Steve), Rhett Leonard, Kevin Blackwell, and Brian Dobson; niece, Julie Hiott (Curtis and Martie) and nephew, Rusty Walker.

As a boy growing up in Summerville dad had a pet squirrel who slept in dad's dresser, as a retiree residing in Mt. Pleasant dad was adopted by 'Andi' a blue jay. Andi would perch on dad's hand and peck at seeds or pull dad's hair through a grommet in his Tilley hat. Dad's life journey was one of curiosity and service. A Clemson diploma in hand Dad was off to training camp with the 1st Chemical Warfare Battalion. Dad served in the Pacific Theater and like many told no stories of the War. After the war Dad met mom at the Azalea Festival, she liked jazz and he liked opera but they clicked together. Soon after four kids would fill their lives with noise. A true son of Clemson dad was a staunch supporter and was looking forward to his 75th class reunion in June. After a heart attack 30 years ago Dad began a daily exercise program and at 88 years old he took up yoga. He made many new friends and looked forward to discussing events of the day while working out. Dad's foundation of strength was with God and within his church St. Paul's.

In addition to his wife, Mary Frances, Richard was preceded in death by two daughters, Anne Marie Dobson and Elizabeth Conlon Blackwell; daughter-in-law, Tina Louise Bischoff; as well as his brother, John Frederick Bischoff and sister, Elsie Walker.
