Richard James "Dick" Abbott, 89, of Johns Island, South Carolina, husband of Mary Spain Abbott, entered into eternal rest Thursday, January 23, 2014. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in Church of The Nativity Catholic Church, 1061 Folly Road, at 11:00 a.m. Prayers of Final Commendation and Farewell will be held in Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, January 27, 2014, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
Dick was born February 1, 1924, in Columbus, Ohio, son of the late Petri Abbott and Mae Rice Abbott. Dick joined the Army Air Corps after high school and served during World War II. While stationed in Charleston, he met his wife of 66 years, Mary, at the USO at Joseph Manigault House. He was the Airport Manager for PanAm Airlines for over 20 years, spending much of his career in the Caribbean, prior to returning to Charleston, where he formed Abbott Travel Agency. Throughout his life, Dick traveled around the world and visited over 80 countries. He was a wonderful story teller and enjoyed recounting his travel adventures to family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife; three sons: Dean, Bruce and Lance; four granddaughters, Lindsay, Haley, Chelsea and Jennifer; grandsons-in-law, Aaron and Bill and a great-grandson, James.
