Knight

The Rev. Dr. Robert Marsden “Monty” Knight, Baptist minister and pastoral counselor, died December 24, 2025, in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, at the age of 82. He was born May 20, 1943, in Herrin, Illinois, to Robert Wilson Knight and Grace Ella Brothers Knight. He was married to Jacqueline Null Knight, who joined him in death one day later, on December 25, 2025.
Dr. Knight earned degrees from Southern Illinois University–Carbondale, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and Princeton Theological Seminary. He served in a variety of roles over a career spanning more than five decades, including Director of the Baptist Student Center at Southern Illinois University, Chaplain at Baylor School in Chattanooga, founding Director of the Dorchester County Mental Health Clinic, and Pastor of First Christian Church in Charleston. Alongside these roles, he maintained a long-standing private counseling practice and served for more than 30 years on the Professional Advisory Committee for Clinical Pastoral Education at Roper St. Francis Healthcare.
A Fellow of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, Dr. Knight was known for integrating clinical psychotherapy with ministry. He was the author of Balanced Living: Don’t Let Your Strength Become Your Weakness (2009) and Notes of a Pastoral Counselor: Reflections across Half a Century (2024), which he dedicated to the memory of his daughter, Amy.
Monty Knight was also a gifted musician, an engaging storyteller, and a generous convener of community, best exemplified by a weekly lunch group he led for more than thirty years that brought together people from many walks of life.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Suzanne Stuckey and Sophia Aiken, and by his daughter, Amy Hampton Knight Cadwell. He is survived by his son, James Rollo Knight (Julie) of Chicago; stepdaughters Lisa Thomas (Milton) of Charleston, Kathryn Sherrod (Will) of Mount Pleasant; stepson Dr. William M. Edwards, Jr. (Katie) of Mount Pleasant; and nine grandchildren.
A joint funeral service for Robert Marsden Knight and Jacqueline Null Knight will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Grace Church Cathedral, Charleston. Private interment at Mepkin Abbey will follow. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
