Rene Charles "Chuck" Fix, Jr.

February 28, 1952 — June 21, 2020

Rene Charles 'Chuck' Fix Jr., 68, passed away following a long illness on June 21, 2020 at his home in Mount Pleasant, S.C. with his wife Judy by his side. Chuck was born in Oceanside, N.Y. to Rene and Helen Fix and grew up in Massapequa, N.Y. He entered the U.S. Air Force as a Second Lieutenant after graduating from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1974. While on active duty he met his future wife, Judy Fedder, a native of Manistee, M.I. and fellow USAF officer. They married in 1983 and welcomed their son Adam in 1988. Chuck retired from the USAF as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1995 and continued to move with Judy's military assignments to Florida, Washington, D.C., Italy, the Azores Portugal, Oklahoma, and Virginia. During this time he earned engineering degrees from the University of West Florida and the University of Florida. He began a new career teaching middle school math in Arlington, VA and discovered his passion for teaching and a love for his students and fellow teachers. He retired from Virginia Public Schools in 2017.
After retiring from teaching, Chuck and Judy moved to Mount Pleasant, S.C. Chuck was an avid cyclist, biking with Judy through parts of France and Italy and biking across Iowa twice. He also loved to work on cars, with an overhaul of a 1988 Mercedes SL560 as his major automotive accomplishment. Chuck also took his last name seriously, as he was an accomplished 'fixer' – whether it was overhauling a motor, installing electrical fixtures, building a pantry, painting or wallpapering – he could do it all. And his generous heart meant that he did a lot of that work for other people. Chuck was known and loved by his family, friends and colleagues for his kindness, patience, gentility and generosity.
Chuck is survived by his wife, Lieutenant General Judy Fedder, USAF-Ret; son, USAF Captain Adam Fix; brothers Randolph (Carla) Fix and Daniel Fix; sisters Nichole (John) Relyea and Michelle Sweeney; sisters-in-law Katherine Fedder and Terry (Randy) McDaniels; and numerous nieces and nephews. Chuck was preceded to Heaven by his parents and grandparents.
A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, June 29 at St. Benedict Catholic Church with COVID-19 precautions in place. The J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Mount Pleasant Chapel is handling cremation and funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers and in honor of Chuck's passion for teaching, the family suggests considering a donation to the Civil Air Patrol's mission in providing aerospace related STEM educational opportunities for youth. Memorials can be made in his name to https://Bit.ly/ChFix or by mail to CAP, PO Box 9251, Montgomery AL, 36108-2342.
Judy and Adam would like to thank the many friends and family who offered prayers, sent cards, shared memories and provided support during and after Chuck's illness, and a very special thank you to the Medical University of South Carolina Hollings Cancer Center and to the Amedisys Hospice staff who were our angels in providing treatments and comfort during this past year.
