Renan Petrucci Uflacker

Dr. Renan Petrucci Uflacker of Mt. Pleasant, died on Sunday, June 12th, 2011 at Hospice of Charleston.  Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil in 1949 he attended medical school and residency in Brazil, with subsequent fellowship training in Interventional Radiology in Oslo, Norway, and Pittsburgh, PA. After practicing in Sao Paulo Brazil, he was invited by long time friend and colleague Dr. Ivan Vujic to join the faculty of the Department of Radiology at the Medical University of South Carolina in 1993, where he remained a tenured professor and director of Vascular and Interventional Radiology until his death.  ARRANGEMENTS BY J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road, on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  A teacher, physician, and researcher, he has written or co-authored multiple textbooks, contributed chapters to numerous additional books, and written over 100 articles for scientific journals. Dr. Uflacker transformed the division of Interventional Radiology into a major national center for the specialty. He has done pioneering work in the areas of liver disease, portal hypertension, peripheral vascular disease, aneurysms, and interventional oncology, being the owner of multiple patents for innovative medical devices. His groundbreaking research, passion for medicine, strong work ethic and extraordinary dedication have extended and improved the lives of countless people.  A mentor to many young people, especially to members of the newest generation of Interventional Radiologists whom he helped train, he is remembered for his unwavering moral compass and keen intellect.  Besides a passion for medicine, Dr. Uflacker had multiple other interests, including photography, history, film, traveling, physics, astrophysics, astronomy, politics, and economics.  Dr. Uflacker was also passionate about classic automobiles, and later in life took up the hobby of restoring and collecting classic Italian cars, including several award winning Alfa Romeos which were displayed in national exhibits.   Dr. Uflacker is survived by his wife, Dr. Helena Becker Uflacker; his son, Dr. Andre Uflacker and Andre's wife, Curry Hagerty Uflacker; by his daughter, Dr. Alice Uflacker and her husband Bryant Mersereau; and his mother, Yone Petrucci Uflacker, of Porto Alegre, Brazil. He became a naturalized US citizen in 2002, with his family. Dr. Uflacker was sixty-two years old. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Blvd, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464 and/or Lutheran Hospice, 1885 Rifle Range Road, Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
