Rebecca "Becky" Love Barnes Herring

Rebecca "Becky" Love Barnes Herring, 84, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of Malcolm LaRoy Herring entered into eternal rest Thursday, November 29, 2018. A Service of Thanksgiving will be held Saturday, December 1, 2018 in Holy Trinity Windermere, 95 Folly Road, at 3:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL. Friends are invited to visit with the family at a reception following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.

Rebecca was born April 23, 1934 in Lucama, North Carolina, daughter of the late William B. Barnes and Lena Mae Paul Barnes. Rebecca came from a long family of educators and she was the Valedictorian graduate of Lucama High School. She received a BS Degree in Education and a Master's Degree in Education from Women's College of North Carolina (later to become UNC Greensboro). She was a retired Accounting Professor and Department Chair with the College of Charleston. She was a recipient of the Distinguished Teaching Award, Distinguished Advising Award and in 2017 was inducted into the Wall of Honor for the School of Business for transformational & lasting impact on the College of Charleston. She was named the Bank of America Teaching Professor-the school's first fully endowed professorship dedicated to exemplary teaching for the 2000-2001 academic year. In appreciation of Professor Herring's outstanding contributions to the CofC, family members, former students, colleagues, friends and the Department of Accounting and Legal Studies established the Rebecca B. Herring Scholarship for Accounting Majors in 2000. Upon her retirement in 2002, Professor Herring was named Associate Professor Emeritus-honoring her three decade career with the College of Charleston. During her years teaching at CofC she worked diligently to complete her CPA certification. Rebecca attended Holy Trinity Windermere Church for the last 55 years.

She is survived by her adoring husband of 61 years, Malcolm LaRoy Herring of Charleston, SC; daughter, Julie Lynn Herring Benasutti of Charleston, SC; son, Dr. Paul Malcolm Herring and wife Noreen of Mount Pleasant, SC; four grandchildren, Kelly Rebecca Herring, William Paul Herring, Elizabeth Lynn Herring, and Emily Lynn Benasutti; along with nieces and a nephew from Whiteville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Rebecca B. Herring Scholarship for Accounting Majors C/O College of Charleston, 66 George Street, Charleston, SC 29424.
