Raymond Willis Hawes

September 28, 1938 — November 3, 2013

Raymond Willis Hawes, 75 of Mount Pleasant died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 3rd after a long battle with cancer.

He was born in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and started life in Long Crendon, Bucks. He moved to Grendon Underwood, Bucks in 1980 and then to Devon for several years before moving to the U.S.A. Upon his arrival in the states he resided first in New Hampshire and then ultimately settled in the Charleston, South Carolina area.

Ray was an avid sportsman. He set records at Thame Cricket Club, captained the Aylesbury Cricket Club for many years, also playing for Oxfordshire and Bucks, SOA and then Devon over 50's. He was a keen golfer winning many tournaments and competitions worldwide and also played table tennis and squash.
He started his working life with his father, Willis Hawes, at Crendon Concrete and then formed Hawes Farm Buildings, Ray went on to patent a number of inventions including the framework for the category five hurricane house (made from aluminum) that he lived in. This house is the first of its kind and is engineered to withstand winds of over 157 mph and earthquakes up to 8 on the Richter scale. These houses are built by one of his companies, Cat Five Houses of Charleston. The parent company, Rapid Deployable Systems Inc., was incorporated on January 1, 2000. It still runs successfully in the US, proudly serving the U.S. Navy and the construction industry by providing temporary enclosures for their various needs.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Maureen Hawes (formerly King) who was born in Thame. He is also survived by, his sisters Daphne, Margaret and Sylvia, his four children Nina, Julia, Angela and Geoff and nine grandchildren.

Ray will be sorely missed as he was an incredible man that lived an amazing life and touched many people along the way.
