Raymond E. "City" Smith, 85, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Charlene Harley Smith entered into eternal rest Thursday, June 7, 2018. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, June 16, 2018 in Pittman Street Baptist Church, 5105 Pittman Street at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the service the family will receive friends in the sanctuary from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Private inurnment will take place at Beaufort National Cemetery. Raymond was born June 10, 1932 in Brunswick, Georgia, son of David Patrick Smith and Ruby Smith. After graduating from Charleston High School he attended the College of Charleston, where he played basketball and earned his undergraduate degree. He continued to value education, later receiving a Masters of Education from the University of South Carolina and University of Southern California. Raymond served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. After a long career at the U.S. Customs, he retired as a Supervisory Customs Inspector. Later he passionately served as an ordained minister on behalf of the International Baptist Church in Sofia, Bulgaria.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years; two sons, Timothy Callaway (Iwona) of New Jersey and James Patrick Smith (Heather) of Galva, I.A.; a daughter, Sherri Ann Andrews of Hanahan; a brother, Luther K. Smith (Joanne) of Charleston; and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Pat Smith and Gene Smith; and two sisters, Frances Wilburn and Lavonia Brown.
