Ray Edward Goodbred

Ray Edward Goodbred, a well known gifted artist and respected art teacher of New York and Charleston, SC, passed away on the afternoon of May 27, 2011.  e was HeReverend Andy Hunter will officiate at a graveside service in Magnolia Cemetery in Charleston, Wednesday, June 1, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. 

Mr. Goodbred was born December 7, 1929 in Brooklyn, NY, the son of Edward and Rose Goodbred.  He studied at the Art Students League of N.Y.  From 1948-1951, he studied with Robert Brackman and Ogden Pleissner.  He also studied at the National School of Fine Arts.  He taught at the Art Students League of New York, Gibbes Gallery Hasting School of Art and at his own studio.  He was a member of the Charleston Artists Guild for many years.  He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

His art work is in many public and private collections including the Pentagon, the Hibernian Society, the Medical University of SC, the Art Students League, the Gibbes Gallery, the Citadel, the College of Charleston, the Episcopal Diocese, Roper Hospital, the Country Club of Charleston and others.

Among the many awards he has received are the Salmagundi Club, Knickerbocker Artists of America, the Saul Alexander, the Yasotuma, the Trump, the Pastel Society, Cammer Memorial, Macowin Tuttle and the SC Annual.  He is also listed in the Who's Who of American Art.

He never retired, painting many still lifes, landscapes and figure paintings, but was best known for his portraits.  Although he was not conducting classes in recent years, his enthusiasm for art was such that any astute artist could learn much in conversation with him.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara Zorn Goodbred of Denmark, SC; three nephews: Wade Faustman of Allen, TX, Gary Faustman and Bert Faustman both of Long Island, NY.  He is predeceased by his sister, Rose Faustman.

The family expresses their appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff of Roper-St. Francis and Hospice of Charleston.
