Ramona Dillow Nute

July 15, 1914 — May 23, 2011

Ramona Francis Dillow Nute of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, died Monday, May 23, 2011, at Hospice of Charleston. 


Born in Lewis County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob and Grace Martin Dillow. She graduated from Lewis County High School in 1932 at age 17, attended Morehead Teacher's College for one year and later completed her baccalaureate degree at Lake Erie College, in Painesville, Ohio. She taught at Aills, Tar Fork and MacDowell Junior High, a one room school house in the Garrison area. She lived with families in the area of her teaching assignments. She taught at Lewis County Jr. High School before moving to Connecticut. She taught in Lewis County for a total of nine years, six before moving to CT and three after. She taught at a one room school house in the Kinniconick area, then taught at the larger school where her husband, Raymond Nute, was principal. She also taught in the the Madison School District in northeast Ohio. She was an avid bridge player and was widely traveled in the US, Europe and Middle East. 


Surviving are: three daughters, Katharine N. Dixon, of Del Mar, California, Janie (Barry) Nute-Thomas, of Mt. Pleasant, and Patricia N. Marquis, of Charleston, South Carolina; one son, Raymond E. (Jan) Nute Jr. of Ava, Missouri; six grandchildren, Jennifer Dixon of Missoula, Montana, Leslie (Howard) Smart of San Diego, Heather Neace of Northern Kentucky, Marabeth (Michael) Null of Ohio, and Jessie (Michael) Haselden and Kelly Marquis, both of Charleston; two step-grandchildren, John Thomas of Tennessee and Mary Jean Thomas of Portsmouth, Ohio; and 10 great-grandchildren, Hayley and Jennifer Smart of San Diego, Isabella Dixon of Missoula, Megan and Jonathan Neace of Northern Kentucky, Clay and Bailey Shirey of Ohio, and Lauren, James and Matthew Haselden of Charleston. She was preceded in death by one sister, Eloise Howell; and five brothers, Elwood, George, Maurice, Martin and Wilbur Dillow. 


Services were conducted Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at 12 Noon, at J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home, Inc. Mt. Pleasant Chapel and Saturday, May 28, at 1:00 p.m. at Gaydos Funeral Home in Vanceburg.
